It was fairly easy to set-up but I did have to do some on-line sleuthing to figure out how to configure it in native Mac OS journal mode instead of the Windows (as it comes out of the box). Windows users will want to re-format to NFTS. The Turbo USB function is a plus (currently I've daisy-chained the FireWire side of the drive). It's quiet and energy-efficient. In the 2 weeks I've had it, no complaints.

Then all was good to go. (Would have worked right out of the box, but i wanted Mac OS format.) Had read that Mac OS 10.5.7 was presenting some trouble for Buffalo drives, but i had no trouble at all. Did NOT have the drive attached when updating (known good method to avoid problems). Used it to clone my system, and all went just fine. The power supply cable, from the power brick to the drive, seems quite thin and i wonder how it will hold up over time. Other drives i have had came with thicker power supply cables. Maybe all will be OK, just wanted to mention that. Like the form factor....sleek and black....very unobtrusive. So,....so far so good. Time will tell more. Adios!

Plugged it in and the directions were easy to follow. But then I got stumped with installing the Memeo software. Called Buffalo and quickly got a knowledgeable technician who quickly figured out that the version of the software on the drive was corrupted. Not to worry--he told me to log on to the Memeo web site and download a fresh version. This worked perfectly and it was quickly installed. NB--you need the serial number of the software that taped on to a very flimsy piece of cellophane covering the documentation; don't lose it! Since then it's been working flawlessly. The power saving setting and almost instant backup with the Memeo software are very nice features! Also, with no fan it's, nice and quiet.

I connected this Hard disk to laptop and it just took few minutes to get the drive working.
The performance is wonderful as it didn't even make any noise (I tried couple other which made noise of fan while using it) and the data transfer is fast enough compared to other drives.
Overall I am very much happy and I strong recommend this product.

Then machine comes on ok, and then turn drive on ... all ok. Even with Auto feature turned on on drive. Contacted Buffalo support and it's been a week since they promised me a 48 hour response in the support confirmation email. Buffalo's support is not there. Will keep drive and continue to use but most likely will never by another Buffalo item due to their absence in response.

Reviews & Ratings for 1TB DriveStation Combo External Hard Drive - USB and FireWire 400 I bought this unit expressly to back up my MacBook Pro. The price was right, and earlier reviews were favorable.
The unit is well-packaged, and gets 5 stars for not using ANY plastic, thermosealed or otherwise. It's all recycled and recyclable paper/cardboard. Props for not having to risk a nasty cut.
Setup could not be easier: Plug in power, plug in USB or FireWire cable (both are included, although they might be a bit short for some users, especially the firewire cable). Plug it into the Mac, boot up, and voila...drive is immediately recognized.
It is of course formatted in FAT 32, and has both Windows and Mac backup software included. I tried the Mac backup software, to do a full backup of my internal drive. There are about 52GB of data on the drive currently.
The Mac product is Memeo, and a full-product serial number is included. After setting up the parameters, Memeo started scanning all files, which took at least 30 minutes. It finally started backing up...and told me it would be done in 29 hours. Yes, 29 hours. After 30 minutes, the estimate dropped to 28 hours. At this rate I was still looking at over 12 hours for backing up 52GB, so I launched Time Machine.
Time Machine wanted to reformat the drive (naturally) so I backed up the Memeo folder to the internal drive, and went ahead. About an hour later, my full backup was complete.
So, plenty of props for the drive itself, but the included software isn't worth the purchase price (free) in my judgment.
Would definitely recommend to friend or family, and would buy again.
