D700 FX-Format Digital SLR Camera

D700 FX-Format Digital SLR Camera

The Nikon D700 features the exclusive 12.1 Megapixel FX-format CMOS sensor, measuring 23.9 x 36mm, which is nearly identical to the size of a 35mm film frame - thereby eliminating any significant crop factor or focal length multiplier. Images taken with the D700 exhibit exceptional overall quality, broad tonal range and depth, along with extremely low-noise throughout its expansive ISO range of 200 to 6400. Nikon's exclusive EXPEED Image Processing System is central to driving the speed and processing power needed for many of the camera's features; such as the 51-point auto focus system and speedy 5 fps frame advance, and the camera incorporates many of the features that have made point-and-shoot digital cameras so popular - such as Live View, Auto ISO, and in-camera image enhancement. The D700 has been designed with refined ergonomics and usability and a streamlined, aesthetically pleasing layout so photographers can take pictures with greater accuracy and comfort and with less concern about fatigue. The camera's bright viewfinder provides virtually 100 percent coverage for accurate framing, while an ultra-high definition, 920,000-dot VGA LCD screen on the rear of the camera displays images with vivid color and clarity. The 170-degree wide viewing angle makes composing shots using the LCD screen in LiveView mode easy, and the camera also features a unique Virtual Horizon digital level sensor that indicates the camera's alignment relative to the true horizon on the rear LCD screen or in the viewfinder. The cameras impressive durability means that it can be used under the most demanding conditions. The exterior of the D700 is crafted of magnesium alloy and the camera's shutter mechanism is tested to 150,000 release cycles. Furthermore, the comprehensive array of rubber gaskets and seals protect vulnerable entry points from dust and moisture. If for some reason dust were to make its way into the camera (most probably when changing lenses), the Image Sensor Cleaning function employs piezoelectric elements to generate vibrations at four specific frequencies to optimize dust removal. * 1 Megabyte (MB) = 1,000,000 bytes; 1 Gigabyte (GB) = 1,000,000,000 bytes; MP = MegaPixels ** Approximate number of JPEG (compressed file) pictures. JPEG file sizes vary based upon camera model and internal file size and compression settings, as well as user-selected resolution and compression mode settings. In addition, JPEG compression will result in different file sizes based upon picture complexity. Some host devices may not support all of the Flash storage capacities listed. Consult your device's owner's manual for supported capacitities.

Reviews & Ratings for D700 FX-Format Digital SLR Camera
The D-700 camera is in certain ways more advanced than the highest end pro model, the D3. It offers automatic sensor cleaning, a lighted composition grid which can be turned on or off, and a built in flash (small but good at triggering other flash systems or for fill flash). With the (highly recommended) battery base it is about the size and weight of the D3.

A good reason to use a full frame D-SLR is that a film body can be used as a backup and the lenses all work the same (no cropping). Thus I use a Nikon F7 film body as a backup in case there are problems with my digital body.

For me the delight of the D-700 is in using true wide angle lenses again without cropping. I own a 20mm, 35mm as well as a 105 macro for primes, and a 70-300 zoom for documentary work. But the prime lenses do a better job.

The camera will feel heavy to some (though not to me since I spend a lot of time with medium and large format cameras), but it is a solid workhorse.

Though cameras can be bought with a higher megapixel resolution the Nikon transfer curve can be set to give tremendous dynamic range without burning out highlights. It also is a low light "star." My 16X20" prints are fantastic.

Finally, it is a operationally straightforward camera to use. Almost as simple as my film model.

Anyone who considers themselves in or near the "pro" league should take a look at this camera.
