This is an upgrade from Windows 98, 98SE, and Millennium editions only. eXPerience the next-generation operating system for your home PC! Windows XP Home Edition delivers all the features you need for the digital age - including tools for creating and managing digital photos, music, and video, or for building a home network - all in one box. Windows XP is built on Windows 2000 to give it a solid, reliable foundation. It then builds on this foundation with new multimedia capabilities, Internet Explorer 6, new Internet security features, an improved visual design that puts the features you use most in the foreground, and much more! Windows XP features built-in Internet, home networking, and real-time voice, video, and instant messaging support. In fact, Windows XP includes a complete digital video editing suite for making the most of your home movies. Reviews & Ratings for Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition Upgrade with Service Pack 2
Why update a 2001 ME computer now? While my HP Pavillion laptop was still functional, it was not functioning well: occassional lockups, stuck on IE 6, and most importantly, fewer and fewer effective anti-virus, anti-spyware and firewall software. The hardware was still in good shape and exceeded all the XP-Home minimums.
.
So, I took a chance. For those HP users in a similar situation, do check the HP web site. They have detailed instructions for updating your HP computer to XP. Read and follow them. The instructions include which of the original HP software needs to be deleted BEFORE updating to XP: such as your anti-virus and other security components, your Adaptec/Roxio drivers for CD/DVD hardware, and various craplets that will not work on XP. XP has working drivers for your CD/DVD drives. If you do not delete the listed software, the existence of the incompatible components may not be able to be removed and may also block install of replacements. You should have new security software available to install after the upgrade conversion is completed.
.
The CD installs XP-Home SP2 so you will still have work to do.
.
It is all doable and relatively easy for those with experience loading and updating software, but if you are not comfortable with the processes below, line up your favorite neighborhood guru to help with the processes below.
.
Microsoft recommended that I stay with FAT32 formatting for my 10 gigabyte hard drive, I chose to reformat to NTFS to be absolutely compatible with my other computers; as a result, there is is a speed penalty which is acceptable to me but might not be for you. Instructions for converting to NTFS are simple to do, but hard to find. Once XP is on your computer, use Help from the desktop, searching for NTFS to find them.
.
Next activate the Windows Firewall and go on line to download the security system of your choice. Or, if you have pre-planned, load the XP compatible security system you have on-hand.
.
Now, go on-line and run Windows Update. First get the critical updates, one of which will be SP3 which contains all the SP2 updates. Keep going back to Windows Update until you get all the updates available that you want including IE 7, Windows Media 11, and various hardware updates. Do click and check the details on each update you approve; there are a few really big downloads, that may be irrelevant for your computer which you do not want to install on an older computer with limited disk space.
