MacBook Pro 17"/2.93GHz Intel Core 2 Duo/4GB/320GB (7200 rpm)/SuperDrive/Glossy Widescreen
Carved from a single block of aluminum, the new 17-inch MacBook Pro's unibody enclosure is slim and streamlined, making it the world’s thinnest and lightest 17-inch notebook just 0.98-inch thin and 6.6 pounds. But it’s not just for looks. The rigid construction of the unibody also makes MacBook Pro more durable than ever. So you can throw it in your bag and pull it out at a photo shoot, in a hotel room, or on location without a second thought.
Throw in a battery that not only runs for up to 8 hours, but can be recharged up to 1000 times, discreet and integrated graphics, a one-touch glass touchpad, spacious hard drives, webcam, loads of connectivity options, Intel Core 2 Duo processors and legendary Apple styling and you have the cutting edge of notebook technology in your hands.

Reviews & Ratings for MacBook Pro 17"/2.93GHz Intel Core 2 Duo/4GB/320GB (7200 rpm)/SuperDrive/Glossy Widescreen The thin and light aluminum chassis hide the screen size and power of this notebook. This is a great notebook that I use for all my development.

Reviews & Ratings for MacBook Pro 17"/2.93GHz Intel Core 2 Duo/4GB/320GB (7200 rpm)/SuperDrive/Glossy Widescreen We have given up desktop computers in our (3-computer) household in favor of laptops. I do not miss a desktop at all with this Mac, since the screen is so large. The display is wonderful. My only annoyance is that the email is linked to their own product, which I don't use. The portability is also a plus, although this is much heavier than other laptops, largely due to the big display.

Reviews & Ratings for MacBook Pro 17"/2.93GHz Intel Core 2 Duo/4GB/320GB (7200 rpm)/SuperDrive/Glossy Widescreen I am a website developer and this machine is powerful enough and portable enough to complete all of my work. I am a windows convert, and still have XP running on VM Ware Fusion. The screen is stunning, the battery is superior to all other laptops that I have used. The machine is fast and have since upgraded it to 8gb.
It took a little getting used to OS X, but with a little research and willingness to learn, was a smooth transition. This laptop pairs up beautifully with the 24" cinema display, and have been surprised at how easy it has been to hook up peripherals and other equipment. I have a Blackberry Storm and have it syncing beautifully with 3rd party software. Printers have not required any additional drivers and anything bluetooth seems to be found easily and flawlessly. The machine is a little pricey, but in my case was worth the portability.

Reviews & Ratings for MacBook Pro 17"/2.93GHz Intel Core 2 Duo/4GB/320GB (7200 rpm)/SuperDrive/Glossy Widescreen An excellent machine - well worth the wait. The glossy screen does have a little glare, but the vibrant colors of the display jump out at you and make it un-noticable.

Runs like a Supercar

Pros: bright screen, easy to use, Fast/High Speed, Memory Cons: battery life, firewire 800, new video connection
Reviews & Ratings for MacBook Pro 17"/2.93GHz Intel Core 2 Duo/4GB/320GB (7200 rpm)/SuperDrive/Glossy Widescreen The new 17" Macbook Pro is like driving a turbo-charged exotic car. Its pretty, its fast and its very well engineered. It corners around OS X and the included Macintosh suite of tools with ease. Final Cut Studio runs like a dream. 4GB is ample memory and by the time the next generation of memory hungry apps are looking for 8GB, I suspect the 2X4GB kit price will have dropped substantially from its current list price of around $1k. The screen is very crisp although I might lean towards a matte finish next time over glossy. The "8 hour" battery pretty much immediately drops to about 5-6 hours if you're actually doing any work. Can't complain about that at all after being used to 2 hours on the previous incarnation.
Speaking of which, the speakers are much louder than my previous PowerBook and are actually useful, if not exactly hi-fidelity.
What is also very impressive is the speed that the Macbook Pro 2.93Ghz processor handles Windows. I took advantage of the rebated offer for VMWare Fusion and must say I find XP runs cleaner and quicker than most dedicated PC's I've used. Running OS X and XP side by side is pretty slick.
The 802.11n specs out at almost the same speed as a direct ethernet connection with my current ISP's cable broadband throughput, so suddenly having a CAT5 connection in every room of the house is a non-starter.
Design-wise, the solid carved aluminum chassis is very rigid and very nicely shaped, easy to hold when closed up as well and feels comfortable in your hands.
On the down side, none of my Firewire 400 devices will plug in without a 800/400 cable or adapter. Although 3 USB ports are good, I would have happily given one up for a single 400 port.
Also, Apple has yet again switched its connection solution for video out/digital monitors so any mini-port connection that used to work no longer does and you'll need to buy those all over again. Can't see what the point of that was other than a marketing decision to sell you the same adapters again.
Other than those few things, this 17" Macbook Pro is a solid performer and something I plan on hanging on for quite a while. My last Mac desktop I purchased in 1999 so hope that this one has the same stamina and shelf life. So far, its off to a great start.

Reviews & Ratings for MacBook Pro 17"/2.93GHz Intel Core 2 Duo/4GB/320GB (7200 rpm)/SuperDrive/Glossy Widescreen I'm very happy with this computer so far. I'm using it with the 24" LED display as a dock and can take the computer with when traveling. Took a while to get since I bought when it was new, but was worth the wait.
