MacBook 13.3" Aluminum Intel Core 2 Duo 2.4GHz/2GB/250GB/SuperDrive
Evolution is good. From one solid piece of aluminum comes a MacBook that’s thin and light, beautifully streamlined, and durable. The seamless glass and instant full screen brightness of the 13.3-inch LED-backlit display make everything you see flat-out spectacular... including the display itself. Snow Leopard v10.6 is also included.
Advanced nVidia integrated graphics provide more responsive gameplay and more realistic 3D environments, while the redesigned multi-touch trackpad has even more room and the entire trackpad is also the button so it's clickable everywhere.

A problem with the edge cutting into the hand
Date: January 23, 2009
Written By:
TryingOutMacBookFrom: Los Angeles, CA
Pros: small size, energy efficient, powerful cpu and gpu Cons: front edge is sharp and uncomfortable, lid/screen does not open as much as other laptops
Reviews & Ratings for MacBook 13.3" Aluminum Intel Core 2 Duo 2.4GHz/2GB/250GB/SuperDrive I ordered this MacBook from MacConnection, and got great service throughout.
On the plus side, this is about the only way to get this level processor and this level GPU in a laptop of this size. The weight and battery life are excellent.
I gave "ease of use" a 1-star rating because I normally lean the edge of my hand on the front edge of the laptop whenever I use the trackpad. I do this for any laptop of any brand. That's also just the default place where I put my hand for reading, etc.
The front edge of the MacBook aluminum is a sharp 90 degrees of metal. I didn't notice it in the Mac Store, but after a full day of using it at home, it became painful.
End of story I returned my MacBook to MacConnection for that reason. I wasn't charged a restocking fee because there was also a problem with the power system, common among MacBooks. (The battery sometimes failed to charge when plugged in, and wouldn't work until it was removed and replaced. This happened twice in two weeks.)
One other ergonomic problem: the screen will open to a smaller angle than most other laptops. (Same as White MacBook.) The booklet that comes with the MacBook even makes it a point to say NOT to open the lid further than it wants to go; I think the makers are aware of this difference.
If you ever work with your laptop on a low table or on your lap, the screen won't open wide enough to comfortably view the screen.
These two problems are minor for some, but for me I had to return it.
As for the OS and the pre-installed iLife, if you don't like MacOS you can always change it or do a dual boot. The problem with the sharp front edge and the lid, however, can never be changed.
Some reviewers on other websites even talk about filing the edge down. I didn't want to risk it myself.
I rated this an overall "do not recommend," but for people who don't rest their hand over the front edge of laptops, and who don't use it on their laps, there would be no problem at all.
A final note: to get these same components in another laptop, with the same warranty service, would cost just about as much. (Perhaps only $100-$200 less.) More importantly, there is no other laptop on the market with the same combination of small size and energy efficiency with powerful components.

Pros: weight, performance, screen, backlit keyboard Cons: still need a graphic patch as of january 2009
Reviews & Ratings for MacBook 13.3" Aluminum Intel Core 2 Duo 2.4GHz/2GB/250GB/SuperDrive Great machine, I traded from a 2.16 MBP with a 128 meg dedicated graphic card and the new 2.4 unibody MB is a faster machine. For my need, despite the lack of dedicated graphics, it outperforms the older MBP. However, I'm still waiting for a patch from apple to fix some weird graphic behaviors when the machine has been open and taxed for a few days (Graphics don't refresh properly in safari or in the finder when you scroll down a page). The machine is, and feel, incredibly light and the screen is gorgeous (as soon as you get used to the gloss). Overall, I say go for it.

Pros: cool trackpad, great screen, excellent new look Cons: very expensive
Reviews & Ratings for MacBook 13.3" Aluminum Intel Core 2 Duo 2.4GHz/2GB/250GB/SuperDrive This is by far the best computer i have ever owned the trackpad, although kinda clunky at first, is a great inovation. It takes a few days to get used to it but it definately is an improvement. Gestures are great! I haven't noticed a power issue, I actually think the battery lasts longer than the old white macbook (LED screen?) and the new styling is AWESOME.

Reviews & Ratings for MacBook 13.3" Aluminum Intel Core 2 Duo 2.4GHz/2GB/250GB/SuperDrive I already have a home based late model IMac and bought this product (upgrade from a G4) for frequent away trips but already my wife has taken over the "little' computer as we call it - she calls it her own! We find the pad easy to use especially the two fingered scrolling and of course the Mac dragging system for photos, desktop and the like is the best! The light weight is a plus and so is it's improved lid closing. All in all as good as it gets. Tony

Cons: the trackpad is quirky!
Reviews & Ratings for MacBook 13.3" Aluminum Intel Core 2 Duo 2.4GHz/2GB/250GB/SuperDrive Well, I have used Mac computers since almost day one. This is the first laptop I've purchased. I love it! It's light and I take it to all the coffee-shops, etc. Now that I own one, I've noticed that when I am "out and about," the vast majority of laptops ARE apples. At least that is the case where I live.

Reviews & Ratings for MacBook 13.3" Aluminum Intel Core 2 Duo 2.4GHz/2GB/250GB/SuperDrive i was apprehensive about buying a Mac. i've only ever been familiar with the workings of PC's. while there was a learning curve, Mac made it very easy for me to quickly catch on. the design and function of the macbook are both attractive and efficient. i am very pleased and hope to get a good 3-4 years of service out of it...PC Connection made my transaction smooth and fast. their customer service and tech support were fantastic, both prompt and polite. thanks!

Pros: lighter, large trackpad Cons: lacks firewire, battery life is not as good
Reviews & Ratings for MacBook 13.3" Aluminum Intel Core 2 Duo 2.4GHz/2GB/250GB/SuperDrive This MacBook makes a nice change from the original white and black MacBooks. I already had used Leopard so working with this computer was easy. I love the new large trackpad, although the sensor can be too sensitive (This can be adjusted). The battery life is not as good as the original White MacBook and it appears to take longer to charge. I get around 3.5 hours of normal usage compared to 4 hours from the old White MacBook. I love the backlit keyboard and the smooth touch of the aluminum body. Shame it doesn't have a FireWire port as backups to my external hard drive take considerably longer (4x). Overall, I'm content with it. Just wish they could have kept some of the features from the older generation of MacBooks.

Pros: backlit keyboard, multi-touch trackpad, unibody design, led backlit screen, battery life
Reviews & Ratings for MacBook 13.3" Aluminum Intel Core 2 Duo 2.4GHz/2GB/250GB/SuperDrive The new macbook by far the sturdiest notebook I have ever used. The oversized trackpad provides over double the room to navigate your finger on compared to most notebooks. I didn't think that the backlit keyboard would be very useful but I'm glad that Apple added that feature. The feature I love the most about the new macbook is the multi-touch gestures. These make navigating through any application a breeze. I never have to click to scroll or click to go back a page and switching through windows an effortless task.

Pros: size and weight, design Cons: difficult transition from pc
Reviews & Ratings for MacBook 13.3" Aluminum Intel Core 2 Duo 2.4GHz/2GB/250GB/SuperDrive This is my first mac. I had basically no experience with macs. The transition has been somewhat difficult. It has not been easy to relearn how to use a computer. Even after a few weeks, I'm still figuring out how to do things. This computer runs so fast. Probably the most impressive thing is how fast it starts up. I can go from off to on the internet in probably about 30 seconds. Great computer!

Pros: quality throughout, at least 2 years ahead of windows-based laptops, light not bulky great for travel Cons: standard 2 gb ram in a 4 gb world
Reviews & Ratings for MacBook 13.3" Aluminum Intel Core 2 Duo 2.4GHz/2GB/250GB/SuperDrive The Macbook is worth the bit of extra money over a Windows laptop. Quality and ease of use abounds! This is my first Mac and I couldn't be happier with the wealth of free software. I do need to run some Windows and Linux programs for work and VMware is an amazing solution (upgraded my memory up to 4 GB to make it work fast). My next desktop will be a Mac. This all started with my iPhone.

A worthy upgrade, but with some changes

Reviews & Ratings for MacBook 13.3" Aluminum Intel Core 2 Duo 2.4GHz/2GB/250GB/SuperDrive I bought this to replace my three-year-old 12" G4 PowerBook, so pretty much everything about it was a big upgrade for me.
It's way faster, has the built-in camera, backlit keyboard (not available on the other MacBook models), multitouch mousepad, plenty of memory and a huge (for now) hard drive. I wasn't crazy about the size at first -- I was used to having a very backpack-portable 12" -- but it's growing on me. It weighs about the same as my old PowerBook but now I can have a couple windows open side-by-side on the wider screen (to compare documents in Word, for example). I also wasn't sure I would like the chiclet keyboard, but it didn't take long at all to get used to. It might be easier to keep clean, too.
The casing is attractive and seems strong, though mine already has a few tiny dents along the very sharp edge of the aluminum block. The LED display is beautiful; much brighter than my old laptop. The built-in speakers are also much higher quality -- you can actually listen to music or watch movies on this one without headphones.
Two things I am not crazy about, though they're certainly not deal-breakers:
(1) The glossy screen looks nice, but despite other people's claims, it IS hard to see when you're in a sunny room -- there's a lot of reflection/glare. Luckily the display is bright, but I would have preferred a non-glossy option.
(2) The new multitouch trackpad provides a lot of cool functions, but I'm still getting used to the no-button structure. When I try to click the "button," the cursor sometimes jumps around as the trackpad fails to distinguish between my finger and thumb. Maybe this will be fixed in firmware updates, or maybe I'll just learn how to use it better, but it's a minor annoyance right now.
Also, there is no Firewire port, so if you have Firewire hard drives or are still using an early-generation iPod, you're going to have to spend some money.
Oh, and the default layout of the function keys has changed. Volume is now on the right, where the Expose keys used to be. You can obviously configure the F-keys any way you like, and some of the Expose functions can now be performed with the mousepad (I love the four-finger swipe to reveal the desktop), but for the first few days it's reminiscent of having a new piece of Microsoft software -- you wonder where they moved everything.
Overall, I'm very happy with this purchase. At this moment in time, I can't think of anything that this laptop is lacking (except a Firewire port).

Pros: clickable trackpad and gestures, dashboard widgets, magsafe connection, backlight sensitivity, easy initial setup, easy program installation, easy-to-use software for photo and video editing Cons: clicking sound on cd/dvd load, gets hot on lap sometimes, can't run the laptop while closed, doesn't play nice with my dlink router
Reviews & Ratings for MacBook 13.3" Aluminum Intel Core 2 Duo 2.4GHz/2GB/250GB/SuperDrive I think this is a great product and would recommend it to anyone looking a laptop with similar specs. It's not perfect, but there isn't a laptop in existence that is, and the pro's out-weight the cons in my opinion. As soon as I got it home, I powered it up and the initial set up was quick and painless, and it connected to the internet just fine. Installation of new programs is a breeze. And it's so beautiful! I love the clickable mousepad and the gestures are awesome! I also like dashboard widgets, once I got used to it. And photo and video editing programs are pretty awesome for included software. Stickies are wonderful and the customizable dashboard widgets rock!
Also, the magsafe connector is one of the best features ever! i ruined my last laptop from frequently accidentally ripping out the power cord at awkward angles. The magsafe connector saves me from this problem because it detaches so easily when any kind of pressure is applied, and because it's a magnetic connection, it can be more shallow than other powercord connections and so doesn't damage the plug or power port on the machine, no matter which direction it's gets pulled off from.
The only problems i have is that sometimes things that you'd think would be customizable aren't (though they might be in windows). For example, I can't set my macbook to run while the lid is closed, unless it's hooked up to an external monitor. This is frustrating, because I'd rather not leave the lid open when it's backing up, in order to minimize the amount of dust that it collects.
Also, it makes a rather alarming sound when a CD/DVD is inserted, that makes you think it's crush/destroying either the disc or itself. But I read on the forums that this is a common sound.
The macbook is rated for 5 hours of battery life on wifi -- I get about 4 and a bit, though I'm usually running 6-9 programs at any given time. I wish the macbook was lighter (after all the samsung x460 has similar hardware specs and is a half-pound lighter), but this weight is at least at the edge of acceptable for toting around airports 'n other places.
All in all, even with these problems, I am very satisfied with my purchase and would buy it again, given the choice between macbook and pc.
