With auto installation, Memeo AutoBackup Software (Download Memeo AutoBackup) and support, the DriveStation Combo is a plug and play secure and reliable backup and storage solution.

(Drivestation purchased here does not have Ethernet) 1) Attach USB direct into computer to download all of the drivers/software on the Drivestation since there is no CD packed with the drive. (I might want this someday) Then detached. 2) Plugged Drivestation into Linkstation via USB 3) Had Linkstation reformat the drive (Fat32 to NTFS?) 4) Linkstation now recognizes an additional 1TB as just another shared folder on the Linkstation.
Drivestation auto powers on/off as Linkstation powers on/off (on a timer for me) and backs up all my computers.
Highly recommend the Memeo backup software that comes with it.

I am a video editor and I've looking for the external harddrive that has its quality and reasonable price. I think Buffalo combo external harddrive has both. The only issue that I have is that it is bulit with plastic, like most of its class, it is very bad for physical shock. I recommend to use it as laying down ( not vertiical way).

Also, its backup mechanisim is intended to be continuous, automatic and "invisible" in the background. I personally like the "do it myself" when I want approach of other products. It has functioned well backing up so far and deferrs CPU use to active programs, causing no delays. The first backup was extremely long, taking over 35 hrs at USB speeds for 85.5 GB. Furthur backups are of changes only to this base backup and seem invisible except for little windowa in the lower right corner that pop up to let you know its working.

I reformatted it for exclusive Mac OS X use, and have been putting it through some pretty savagely heavy usage. Its been quiet, fast and reliable (so far). I'm actually contemplating buying another - even though the sale and rebate is over.

The auto turn-off feature when no usb connection is detected is very useful to me. I have it connected to a few of my home theater components through a USB switch and serves my purpose quite well. However, the read/write speed is not the best I have seen (though not sure if the harddrive or my usb switch is the limitation). Of course I can not use the turbo-USB feature which I suppose would increase access speed. Overall I highly recommend this hard drive.

Because of that buy them as big as you can, for as cheap as you can knowing that they will die within a few years- so you buy another in a couple years hoping to beat the clock. Had a lil problem getting it to format in Mac OS X, but creating a 2nd partition in Drive Setup, then deleting them, and finally creating one new partition fixed the issue. I bought this model becuase it had Firewire (USB also). It is nearly silent and only powers up when connected or when you comptuers is on. Zippy transfer. Overall, a good product at a good price!
