Reviews & Ratings for Asus Eee PC 1000 ATOM CPU/1GB/40GB SSD/NIC/bgn/BT/Cam/Ebony/10"WSVGA/Linux I picked the Asus Eee PC 1000 specifically for the reasons that now make it one of my favorite tech tools. Nice size screen with clarity and brightness under every condition I've experienced. The 6 cell battery is spectacular and well worth the extra few tenths of a pound. And this is one of the few if not the only netbook that allows for a memory upgrade. You can take it to 2 gig. (which I did) But the best recommendation is the 40 gig SSD and the Linux Xandros OS. Everything you need for this mobile device without the bloat. Two weeks after I purchased my Asus I sat it on a table at the coffee shop I frequent and while taking off my coat knocked it off the table. It was one of those high tables with the bar stools. The netbook landed right on it's corner and I thought at the very least the shell would be cracked.
When I recovered from the horror of seeing my new computer bouncing of the hard floor I picked it up to find not a scratch. Opened it, pushed the on switch and watched it boot with not so much as a screen flicker. It's been traveling with me everyday, everywhere since that day. There was a fellow watching this disaster and I said to him as I picked it off the floor, "I guess we're going to see what all the hype about SSD is all about. I don't recommend knocking your Asus on the floor but I'm quite certain my thin & light with a regular HD would have been toast.
Something one wouldn't expect from a netbook is the speakers. Not bad. They're better than a lot of notebooks I've used.
