500GB My Book Home Edition USB 2.0, FireWire, eSATA External Hard Drive
Your baby's first step, your wedding in Bali, all your important milestonesall captured in digital photos and video. What could be more important? Store them safely and keep them backed up on the 500GB My Book Home Edition external hard drive. Installation is a snap because you don't really install this drive- you just plug it in and it's ready to use. There is no CD to install; the included software loads from the drive the first time you plug it in. Save a copy of your photos to an online sharing service, duplicate your e-mail and contacts to your iPod, and back up all your precious files to your My Book. Set it and forget it; every time you save something it's automatically backed up. The My Book takes no more space than a paperback book. Collect two or more and they nest neatly together like volumes on a shelf. The drive turns itself on and off with your computer and Safe Shutdown prevents the drive from being powered down until all your data has been written (works with the USB and FireWire connection only.) The My Book enclosure’s heat dissipating design with Morse Code prevents heat buildup a notorious data killer. The My Book is environmentally-friendly, designed to save power by going into standby mode after 10 minutes of inactivity. When you’re ready to use it, it wakes up automatically.

Reviews & Ratings for 500GB My Book Home Edition USB 2.0, FireWire, eSATA External Hard Drive This hard drive was extremely simple to connect and use. I've had it now for a couple of months and it has worked fine. The only thing I would change about this hard drive is to add an on/off switch. The only way to turn the power off is to unplug it. I just leave it on all of the time.

Reviews & Ratings for 500GB My Book Home Edition USB 2.0, FireWire, eSATA External Hard Drive Time Machine wanted to use it right off. I gave in and abandoned my purchased backup SW. I partitioned the drive. I gave the largest partition to Time Machine and kept the other partition for assorted files. It is very fast, even with USB 2.0. It turns itself on when plugged into the appropriate port. And, turns itself off, when 'ejected'. The flickering lights can be confusing.

Good
Pros: fast, high capacity, quiet Cons: not bootable on mac via firewire
Reviews & Ratings for 500GB My Book Home Edition USB 2.0, FireWire, eSATA External Hard Drive I bought the WD Home Edition drive specifically as a boot disk for my Mac Mini. The specs read "Compatible with Mac OS 10.4 or higher". I took this to mean compatible with Mac OS 10.4 or higher. Right? Wrong! OS X wouldn't even allow me to install a system on it, much less boot from it. Now, what good is a backup drive if you can't boot with it in an emergency? Nowhere in the manual, on the box or on the support website does it say it cannot be used as a boot disk via firewire.
I finally got the straight answer from WD support via telephone. It was not designed to boot on a Mac. Shame on you WD for not disclosing this.
I highly commend PC Connection/Mac Connection for giving me full refund and free return shipping. I purchased from them 2 LaCie d2 Quadras even before I shipped the WD drive back. Good prices and prompt service.
I love the LaCie drives. If you own a Mac, do yourself a favor and grab a couple.

Reviews & Ratings for 500GB My Book Home Edition USB 2.0, FireWire, eSATA External Hard Drive Solidly built unit. Easy to hookup. I was somewhat disappointed with the installation and use of the software for automatic backup. The indicator light really doesn't do much other than tell you it is on or off. Needs a cradle of some sort so you can stand it up without blocking the air vent holes.

Pros: clean design Cons: lack of back up program
Reviews & Ratings for 500GB My Book Home Edition USB 2.0, FireWire, eSATA External Hard Drive I was hoping that this unit, being a well known brand, would have a solid back up program that wasn't just some trial piece.

Pros: good price Cons: not bootable on powerpc, useless software
Reviews & Ratings for 500GB My Book Home Edition USB 2.0, FireWire, eSATA External Hard Drive I bought this drive as a backup device for my iMac G5. It works, is acceptably fast, and the price is reasonable. However, it is not bootable on a PowerPC-based Mac, and you have to dig into WD's support site to find this out. The included Mac software doesn't do anything useful. And I find the "dancing lights" on the front panel to be annoying.
