Here's an interesting note: I recently contacted Western Digital to ask them to confirm my 500GB My Book Studio Edition drive's spindle speed -- the speed at which the disks spin -- as it isn't listed on PC Connection and many other sites, but is listed in some places as 7200 RPM. Their surprising response:
"Depending on availability of parts during production, the internal hard drive in an external enclosure could be either SATA or EIDE. As such, we can only guarantee drive capacity and not a particular model, data interface, rotational speed, or cache size in the external enclosure. Dismantling any single drive external enclosure to obtain this information will void the warranty of the hard drive. Interface and cache of the internal hard drives does not affect the performance of the data transfer rate of the external hard drive unit."

They are fast and generally reliable. I have wondered if one or two of them have flaky FireWire 800 connections because they will occasionally stop responding and I will have to reboot the server. Other than that pretty solid drives.

It comes formatted for Mac. The instructions given by Western Digital for re-formatting it for the PC left out a very important step (disc must be initialized before formatting). The other annoying problem is that the computer does not see the drive during or after bootup. One must unplug the data cable and plug it back in.
