The second purchase for my D300 (after a lens) was an extra battery - the EN-EL3e. Years back I ran out of battery on a perfect day at the Giants Causeway in Ireland and will never forget the pictures that I could have taken. The EN-EL3e has a very good lifespan (time between charges) and pretty durable (have dropped a few). The battery comes with a plastic cover that keeps dust away from the important parts. These batteries can also be used for other Nikon DSLRs - D200, D300, D700 and D80 and MB-D10 multi power battery pack for the D300 and D700.
