It came with little in the way of instructions, and I had to call Epson to figure out how to make it work for me. It turned out I had to use a "professional setting." I got through to a person quickly, by the way. It took about 15 minutes to get things figured out. Otherwise, I have been very happy with the scanner. It is quick and accurate. Note that due to its size, some oversized documents would be too large to scan. Legal size paper (maybe a bit less) looks like the largest that it will take.

I asked another artist/friend for his recommendations, he recently puchased a lesser model Epson, and he agreed that for the money this little Epson was a great choice. I needed to scan dozens of photos for a memory book project for my family and this scanner did a great job. I ordered it and paid the extra price for overnight shipping and it was on my doorstep before I got out of bed the next morning! It was easy to set-up, easy to use and I am overall pleased with the resolution/quality of the scans. I would recommend it to anyone shopping in the $150 price range.

Reviews & Ratings for Perfection 4490 Photo Scanner I have a small book production studio and scan a lot of B&W and color photos with Photoshop on a Mac G4 for medium-quality print jobs. I did plenty of shopping around and I think this is the easily best scanner for your money in the $150 price range. Resolution is comparable with more expensive machines, it scans quickly, and it's a compact, sharp-looking unit. It's really improved my productivity--wish I'd bought it a long time ago. Things I'd change: (1) the lamp dims but doesn't go into standby when you're not scanning; (2) the Twain interface software isn't very intuitive; and (3) pcconnection's shipper (DHL) sent the machine to the wrong facility which slowed down delivery by a day. I wish they would consider using another carrier.
