A bright projector for a right price, but... Date: November 22, 2008
Written By: QS3000 From: Los Angeles, CA

Pros: small size, lightweight, very bright, very good contrast, simple remote control, lamp counter can be reset, detailed menus for advanced settings
Cons: remote is cheap, noisy unless mounted on the ceiling, rca video-in is low resolution, included software good for macos 9 only, front leg is a joke

Reviews & Ratings for PJ551D DLP Projector
The price was high at $600 but a free lamp ($245 value), a free 84-inch
screen ($89 value) and a free ceiling mounting base ($79 value) plus
free shipping was more than enough for me to order it.
It is very bright and easy to operate, but the remote control is a pain
in the butt. You need to press the buttons and actually hear the click
to see some action. The PJ551D has two IR inputs for better control,
one on the front and one on the rear. The "ECO" mode is highly
recommended since it will prolong the life of the lamp and it also
reduces fan noise. If you mount it high then the noise is not a
problem, otherwise it might be. The two fans work full time if you
don't set it in "ECO" mode.
I tried the RCA input with a NASCAR DVD from my $300 JVC DVD player and
the picture was really bad. I used the same DVD with my computer (Mac
G4, OS 10.3) and the VGA input and the picture was very nice. The
internet looks better on a big screen too. You can try a 3-RCA RGB to
VGA cable but if the horizontal resolution is higher than 1200 pixels
you will not get a signal. The CD has a ColorSync profile for MacOS 9.
OS10.3 will recognize it as a monitor with various frequencies (60HZ to
80Hz) depending on video card. There is no special software for PC
systems.
Overall I am happy with it. Except for that remote....

Reviews & Ratings for PJ551D DLP Projector
I can't rate this projector because within 2-3 minutes after turning it on, it made a loud poping sound and died.
