Pros: lots of storage, includes sharepoint, single instance storage, dfs Cons: power supply is not redundant, power supply is not removeable, does not include lights out, 64bit o/s not compatible with older utilities, how do you back up 4tb?, hp support is limited
Reviews & Ratings for HP ProLiant DL380 G5 6TB SATA Storage Server The StorageServer GL160 is a good performing storage server with up to 4TB of SAS disk in a 1u box. The server is based on 64bit Windows Storage Server 2003 R2. And it includes Sharepoint and single instance storage features.
HP engineers do not recommend applying Windows Updates for the O/S. In our experience they cause network instability. Instead, only apply the HP service release provided by the storage department, which includes appropriate windows updates. Double check the applicable version of the software update. This product does not run the same software as higher end servers in HP's storage line and the engineers have recommended incorrect maintenance CDs to us in the past.
Not all utility software is compatible with the 64bit operating system. You may need to update utilities such as Backup Exec, and you might think twice about installing any software on this box if it is critical to you that your storage is not suffering downtime. Having said all of that - the machine is running fine for us now after a rocky installation.
