Speed is what you need when for video editing, big design projects, or managing photo shoots and that’s what this drive delivers with FireWire 800, USB 2.0 and eSATA connectivity. With Western Digital's automatic backup capability, your creative masterpieces will be backed up the minute you save them. Back up important projects to multiple destinations including files servers, portable drives and My Book. Synchronize project files to keep them current and secure. Set it and forget it; every time you save a change it's automatically backed up. Takes no more space than a paperback book. Collect two or more and they nest neatly together like volumes on a shelf.
The capacity gauge allows you to see at a glance how much space is available on your drive. With SmartPower features, the drive turns itself on and off with your computer and Safe Shutdown prevents the drive from being powered down until all your data has been written. (Works with the USB and FireWire connections only.) The My Book enclosure’s heat dissipating design with Morse Code prevents heat buildup a notorious data killer. Installation is a snap because you don't really install this drive- you just plug it in and it's ready to use. There is no CD to install; the included software loads from the drive the first time you plug it in.

Reviews & Ratings for 750GB My Book Studio Edition Quad Interface External Hard Drive Needed to replace a MAXTOR USB that was unreliable, this item (although it wasn't in stock) was a good price compromise between the 500GB and the 1TB model. Selling point was FW800. Works great as a Time Machine volume, as well as a networked "Backup" destination volume. All necessary cables were included, which means I now have yet more spare FW and USB cables, but that's OK. Nice and compact, smaller than the MAXTOR.

Works great with Final Cut Pro

Pros: Easy to Setup/Install, easy to use, fast, high capacity, quiet Cons: distracting indicator lights
Reviews & Ratings for 750GB My Book Studio Edition Quad Interface External Hard Drive I bought two 750GB My Studio drives to use as a scratch disk and file backup for video editing in Final Cut Pro. One of my original enclosures had an issue with the second FW port, but the replacement from PC Connection has worked flawlessly. They are quiet, and fast enough that I have no issues while editing HD over FW 800. I use the WD Anywhere Backup (free license is enclosed) to backup from one drive to the other. My only gripe would be that the indicator lights will flash when my MacBook goes to sleep and this is annoying when I'm also trying to sleep, as they are sitting on my bedroom desk. I simply turn them off.

Reviews & Ratings for 750GB My Book Studio Edition Quad Interface External Hard Drive After attempting to transfer a 80GB folder of video, graphics, aiff files etc. the WD HD kept freezing at 14GB. It eventually froze my MacPro, where force quitting was the only option. After trying to run a project on FCP 6.0 from the WD HD, it caused FCP to unexpectedly quit. Sticking with Lacie from now on.

Reviews & Ratings for 750GB My Book Studio Edition Quad Interface External Hard Drive This is a great backup drive. Although I haven't used it for very long, it didn't complain being used to do a full Retrospect 6.1 network backup of our server and several clients for a full week straight. I especially like that the device comes with a FireWire 400/800 adapter cable and USB. I happen to have the needed eSATA cables so not getting those with the device was no big deal. The only problem is that being able to remove the drive and add a bigger one when the time comes for such action does not appear to be easy or straight forward. This is probably not something the average user needs to worry about, though.

Reviews & Ratings for 750GB My Book Studio Edition Quad Interface External Hard Drive This was a great buy for the money. It's fast with plenty of storage, has multiple connection options, is quiet, and features a space saving desktop format (it sits upright like a book). It was extremely easy to set up: I just plugged it in and it worked. I am not using the software that was included, but instead am using it with Mac OSX Time Machine for harddrive backups, and it works great.

Running w/ Pro Tools

Pros: esata, firewire 800, small, quiet Cons: nothing that is fault of the hd.
Reviews & Ratings for 750GB My Book Studio Edition Quad Interface External Hard Drive I bought this to go with my Mac Book and also to run Pro Tools HD Session on a Mac Pro without having to transfer every time. It will run with Pro Tools HD on a Mac as long as it is formatted for Mac. I however partitioned and made the majority of it FAT32, so as to be compatible on both a Mac and a PC. However, Pro Tools HD doesn't work with FAT32. However, transferring a whole session folder with the eSATA cable takes less than a minute so it's not a big deal transferring back and forth. I haven't yet tried it on my Mac Book using Pro Tools M-Powered so I'm not sure yet if that will work. But, if you keep it all formatted for Mac it works without a hitch.

Nice and quiet but not bootable

Pros: quiet and big Cons: not bootable
Reviews & Ratings for 750GB My Book Studio Edition Quad Interface External Hard Drive This is a perfect Firewire backup drive for my Mac, using Time Machine. It is so quiet, I hardly know it is there and the size is plenty big enough that I don't have to worry for a long time about filling it up.
I was hoping I could install my operating system to it and add some emergency repair applications so that I could boot from this drive occasionally, but apparently this drive is not bootable.
I searched Apple's discussion forums and found a whole list of similar drives like this that are not bootable. I never thought that it would not be bootable, or I might not have bought it. But since I have it now and I like everything else about it, I will keep it.
I am using the FW 800 connection, but it is nice to know I have 3 other choices if that were to stop working.
Another good point is that this drive comes with 3 cables. It doesn't include the eSATA cable, which I don't have an use for at the moment anyway.
