With SmartPower features, the drive turns itself on and off with your computer and Safe Shutdown prevents the drive from being powered down until all your data has been written. (Works with the USB and FireWire connections only.) The My Book enclosure’s heat dissipating design with Morse Code prevents heat buildup a notorious data killer. Installation is a snap because you don't really install this drive- you just plug it in and it's ready to use. There is no CD to install; the included software loads from the drive the first time you plug it in.

I plugged it in to my MacBook and it immediately mounted on my desktop right out of the box. This disk works great and is really fast. Also operates with almost no noise detectable. Easy install - my mac knew exactly what to do. I did not use or install any of the included software due to reviews that commented on having problems with it - besides, the software is totally unnecessary.
It does sleep and occasionally cycles when not being used (i.e.: Time Machine turned OFF) and it is necessary to not leave TM on all the time because I would have to buy a new one of these every 2 months if I did! The cycling is good though, since hard drives tend to freeze up after a few months of no use.

Used this drive to replace it and everything is great. Absolutely no problems thus far and it is very quiet. Comes with cables for FireWire 400 and 800 and USB. Handles eSata but does not include that cable.
