Reviews & Ratings for 46" BRAVIA S Series LCD TV I can't give technological comparisons, just your average joe viewpoint. Ordered this model SONY and a Sharp AQUOS set at the same time for my parents. Although the remote with the Sony is much more user friendly, the picture on the AQUOS is much more vivid with true-to-life colors. As a matter of fact, after about three months, we noticed problems with the colors turning paler - almost a pastel - and brightness on one side of the screen became evident ... we had to call in a repairman. It took him all afternoon to identify the culprit part, but the set was finally repaired. Even after this, I still have to declare the AQUOS superior in picture quality. The SONY is still a great TV, but do compare side by side if you can before purchasing as it's definately a matter of personal preference.

A 'Can't Go Wrong' Purchase

Pros: typically outstanding sony picture quality, 3 hdmi inputs for various sources, wide range of adjustments
Reviews & Ratings for 46" BRAVIA S Series LCD TV I know that Sony makes 'better' TV's in this same series and size, but I'm not sure how to justify spending any more.
I have been purchasing ONLY Sony TV's for 25 years. Every time I look for a new TV I'm tempted by one brand or another, but I always make the decision the same way I (accidentally) did in 1983. At the time I was a newlywed and a first-time home owner, ready to step up from my ugly old RCA console and my bride's 19" box. We shopped for almost a full month, and reduced the field to either a Mitsubishi or a Sony XBR, both with 25" tubes.
After bouncing back and forth between the two different stores, we'd decided to buy the Mitsubishi, since it was $200 less. By a piece of dumb luck, I had a chance to see the same models side by side. As I was leaving a department store after shopping for something else, there they were, side by side sharing the same old-fashioned antenna bolted to the outside wall of the building. What really caught my eye was the picture on the Sony; the skin-tones were so perfect it was hard to believe it was an elec tronic image. Both sets were on the local NBC affiliate at first, and although the Mitsubishi was OK, it was put to shame by the Sony. I switched both sets to check out the other networks side by side, and it was clear that the Sony was in a league of its' own. We bought that first Sonyt XBR, which finally died, but only after 23 years and $80 in repairs. Only a few weeks before the picture tube finally died, yet another person walking by my home-office stopped to comment on how life-like the color was.
We bought a 27" and then a 32" Sony over the years, one of which we still use, and the other was given to a relative who is also still watching it. 6 or 7 years ago, we went to get a TV for our family room, with 2 boys who liked to play video games. Again, we were tempted, but ended up buying another Sony XBR, this one a used 36" with six inputs including ttwo component video for HD. With a FIOS HD signal, it still works like new and the HD picture is as good as anything made since.
This past summer though, I decided it was time to get with the times, and after looking at Vizeo from Sam's Club, as well as Samsung and Toshiba sets, the Sony Bravia won hands-down. Set-up was the easiest yet (probably because the other TVs mentioned weighed 125 and 232 pounds respectively) and the picture was superb. The digital signal from Directv looked great, and the over the air HD was outstanding. Watching sports is now almost a participatory event, and we've even been impressed with the sound. Since switching to FIOS, the impact of HD is almost unbelievable; just watching a rerun of Law & Order on USA makes me almost as giddy as I felt when we got our first color TV back in the late 60's. There is simply no way to fault the picture on this TV whether you're watching a series, a football game, or an auto race. When my oldest son is home from college he and his buddies play video games using one of the HD inputs, and I doubt they'll ever be able to enjoy a 'regular' TV again.
That's why I feel it would be hard to justify the better spec-d and higher priced models even from Sony. I've stood in front of the 120Hz XBR model of the same size, and can't see an appreciable difference in the picture.
When you consider the instantly recognizable quality of the picture this Sony provides, with the excellent service life I've experienced with other Sony televisions, there is no way I could recommend any other TV. If this model isn't quite up to your standards, you can always buy another Sony, but I'd never recommend any television except Sony.
