Pros: large Cons: speed only so so
Reviews & Ratings for 2.0TB My Book World Edition II NAS Drive, Ethernet, 7200 RPM 2TB more than enough space. Gigabit Ethernet connection OK, although large file, backups, etc transfer rate is nothing to get excited about. Setting to Raid 1 mirror took all night for drive to completely finish setup.

It met my needs for good price

Pros: great value, warrantee, easy to use once it's set up Cons: slow if speed is a factor, the software is not included in the price.
Reviews & Ratings for 2.0TB My Book World Edition II NAS Drive, Ethernet, 7200 RPM The reviews I read were very helpful. Some were very negative, but it depends on what you’re needs are. I was looking for a safe place to store complete backups for a few pc’s on my home network and to store music, picture, and video files. It had to be reliable because once the files were transferred they would be removed from the pc’s to free up space. My criteria were 2TB Raid 1 (1 TB formatted), and speed was not a big issue. It was a combination of price, warrantee, and name that lead me to WD. I could have easily gone with a Buffalo or Lacie. The reviews were correct about the documentation, speed, and included software. Don’t rely on the printed instructions; the pdf version on the CD is adequate. It took almost 12 hours to format as RAID 1, the instructions said 5-6. I did it over a wireless network. That may have been a factor. It took about 2 ½ days to backup my pc (about 65GB) using the included backup software over a wireless network. After the initial backup the software scans and picks up updates more efficiently in the background. The speed is much quicker using Explorer to copy folders and files to WD shares. It looks like the backup software verifies as well as copy. They charge you a reasonable set price per computer for the backup software after the 30 trial. I plan on purchasing one license. The other software gives you remote (WEB) access and requires what I think is a pricey subscription after the 30 day trial. I’ll decline on that. I don’t need to access the drive outside my home network. Right now I’m happy with it. It met my needs for good price and I feel better about having my network backed up. Time will tell if it’s reliable over the long run. The warrantee gives me some faith.

Decent NAS

Pros: simple setup, no additional software needed, decent performance, quiet. small footprint, looks good Cons: slow web interface to configure drive, skip the install of mionet, folder names are caps
Reviews & Ratings for 2.0TB My Book World Edition II NAS Drive, Ethernet, 7200 RPM Purchased the 2.0TB My Book World Edition II NAS drive as my other NAS the HP MediaVault MV2010 was near capacity.
The web interface to configure the device (i.e. RAID level, folder shares, etc) is simple to use however painfully slow to access and navigate despite on a 1GB switch.
When creating the folder shares, some reason this device will label it as all CAPS. For example: Documents will become DOCUMENTS when browsing.
If using the Drive Linear option, you get the full 2TB of capacity. When using RAID1, you get 1TB of capacity but you also gain redundancy. I'd rather have the security of a mirrored drive.

Reviews & Ratings for 2.0TB My Book World Edition II NAS Drive, Ethernet, 7200 RPM I've just returned my second example.
WD's Tech Support helped me reset the thing (its a very painful procedure), and told me its a common problem for these drives to "go away" and require a reset. Absolutely not acceptable.

Problematic

Reviews & Ratings for 2.0TB My Book World Edition II NAS Drive, Ethernet, 7200 RPM When it works, it is great. When it doesn't it is a royal pain. The MioNet service that requires a subscription be purchased does, in fact work very well at sharing resources over the internet. The drive itself is the problem. I unfortunately own two different World Edition drives and neither of them will stay on line for more than 24 hours or so without locking up for no apparent reason. Requires a hard restart by unplugging them. Then they will go back on line for a while until they lock up again. This is not helpful if you are out on the road and need access to the data. Great concept. Poor quality on the product.

Good news, bad news

Pros: capacity, raid1 safety available Cons: kinda cranky
Reviews & Ratings for 2.0TB My Book World Edition II NAS Drive, Ethernet, 7200 RPM The good news: a major breakthrough in storage capacity for my four-machine LAN, which is chronically out of space. The setup as additional store is easy. The reconfig from 2tb flat to 1tb RAID1 is easy (after being initiated, the reconfig runs long (an hour or so? I forget). The bad news: the drive occasionally locks up for no apparent reason, which caused a near-heart attack the first time. My data are still there, but it requires a reboot of the drive each time, which takes five minutes or so. The WD Anywhere software, which supposedly permits access from afar, simply will not install on my main machine. I have abandoned it; I don't need it anyway. Finally, my Acronis backup software can't use it in the protected-partition mode, which, it turns out, requires an attached, not a mapped, drive. As a destination for ordinary backups, it's fine.
