The SmartUPS 1500 worked as expected right out of the box. We connected a Netgear NAS directly via USB and it was detected and operational immediately. Piece of cake.

We also installed the Network interface card on the UPS to allow other devices (Windows PC) to monitor the UPS and shut down as required on low battery. Setting up the network interface on the Windows network interface was not as straight forward, and required a couple of attempts to get it right. We ended up having to download a different software package from APC than the one provided on the CDROM in order to get it to work. The CDROM software assumes you have a PC connected directly via serial and the PC serves up the UPS status. In our case, the serial port is occupied by the NAS, so we needed the network monitor package. Once we downloaded the right software, installation was pretty easy. Better doumentation of the network management would have been helpful to save some time.

Overall, we are satisfied now that it is operating....battery life displayed is better than expected (80 minutes: load is 1 PC, 1 NAS, 1 HP Procurve Switch, 1 DSP Modem/Router).
