Back-UPS RS 1500VA/865W 120V USB (8) Outlets, Special Buy - Save $24
This high performance desktop battery backup features maximum protection in a versatile design. The fully featured APC Back-UPS RS can be placed on the floor, or on a shelf. The rack height is 2U when placed on rack shelf (NOTE: no hardware or shelf is included, and no rackmount kit is available for this unit).
Up to six battery backup outlets with automatic voltage regulation (AVR) enable you to work through even the most frequent brownouts and power sags, keeping 75/90/110 minutes of battery power for when you need it most. For printers and other devices that do not store or process information, up to three additional outlets provide surge protection.
Both Ethernet 10/100BaseT and telephone dataline surge protection safeguards against surges entering via network connections. The PowerChute Personal Edition software features easy-to-use safe system shutdown with sophisticated power management.

Then I replaced the battery, and it ran for another 3 years. This new one worked great right out of the box. Software (PowereChute Personal Edition) works fine too.

However, it all crashes if the computer is sleeping and then awakens. Not sure why. Have not got into that with the manufacturer, yet. Their PowerChute driver is so full of neat details for windows and had just about zip for the Mac people.

The basic solid UPS

Reviews & Ratings for Back-UPS RS 1500VA/865W 120V USB (8) Outlets, Special Buy - Save $24 This is pretty much the standard UPS for medium power applications (such as a typical computer tower+monitor or two and perhaps an external drive). It doesn't provide all the power conditioning or management features of its higher end (and vastly more expensive) cousins, but it does the basics very well and most importantly supports a single external battery back. That expansion pack should be considered REQUIRED TO GO WITH THIS UNIT, as it more then triples battery life for less then half the cost of this UPS. It's what makes this a good deal, if you only need a tiny bit of power (like for a router) get a lower end model. With the expansion pack this unit will power a workstation and screen (such as a Mac Pro + 30" LCD) for around 1 hour and 20 minutes new.
Don't forget that the lead-acid batteries don't last forever. As with cars, you'll need to order new ones in 4-5 years or so, although replacements cost much less then a new UPS.
