The Backbone Concentrator Node (BCN) router from Nortel Networks provides high-performance WAN connectivity coupled with advanced multicast and Quality of Service (QoS) features. The router features an aggregate system-forwarding performance that scales to five million pps, and supports up to (104) WAN interfaces, (52) LAN interfaces, and (13) ATM or FDDI interfaces. LAN connectivity is provided by Ethernet, 4 and 16 Mbps Token Ring, FDDI, and 100/1000BaseT. WAN connectivity is provided through synchronous lines operating up to 52Mbps, and includes support for Fractional T1, T1/E1, T3, and DS0A. ATM networks are supported up to 155Mbps via a SONET/ SDH STS-3/ STM-1 interface.

The BCN-RLC AC Router Base Unit features a 13-slot chassis with (1) SRM-L, (1) SRM-F, and (4) 620-watt power supplies, as well as Nortel's BayRS system software suite. The System Resource Module (SRM) provides the router with arbitration and termination for two 256Mbps PPX data paths via a 25-pin D-connector for a terminal or modem. The router further supports an optional SRM for 1 Gbps of total bandwidth and PPX redundancy.

Nortel's BayRS is designed to maximize the router's connectivity and interoperability in multivendor, multiprotocol environments by supporting all major network and bridging protocols. In addition to providing Multicasting that supports a choice of PIM sparse mode, IGMP, DVMRP, and MOSPF streams, BayRS software features industry-standard IBM transport that is supported via Source Route Bridge, Data Link Switching (DLSw), Bisynchronous Pass-Through, and APPN. Other features include Differentiated Services for the assignment of high priority, time-sensitive, and/or mission-critical traffic, as well as Data Compression. The router is fully manageable via Nortel Networks Optivity network management applications, which deliver a complete, SNMP-based enterprise management solution and HTTP-based interface.
