As the signaling market shifts from traditional voice to data-oriented networks, technological change and demand for new applications present unprecedented marketplace challenges. Nortel Networks Signaling Solutions Group (SSG) delivers the new era of networking with innovative, scalable and easy-to-use products that reduce training, installation and operational costs while leveraging the value of existing installations. Central to SSG's product portfolio is the Signaling Server platform. Implementing Nortel Networks newest signaling technology, it allows customers to leverage the value of their installed systems, while introducing advanced functionality as networks grow and converge.

Featuring asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) as its internal transport system, the Signaling Server platform delivers carrier-class reliability in a compact, yet versatile design. By using high-performance, commercial technology within a fully-redundant, distributed processing environment, the Signaling Server's small footprint (less than four square-feet) and flexible architecture holds sparing costs to a minimum, while delivering advanced features to the marketplace.

The new economics of networking require scalability and versatility as critical design ingredients. The Signaling Server's distributed architecture not only means that there are no single points of failure in the network, it also allows each Signaling Server module to operate as a self-contained processing environment, so that capacity and services can be added without impacting existing functionality. Because of the Signaling Server's highly flexible design, the system can be easily expanded with new services and link capacity as networks grow. The Signaling Server's flexible platform also allows new services to be easily deployed, either as dedicated applications, or as co-resident functionality within a single node in the network. This "geographic independent" personality allows customers to respond rapidly to changing network requirements.
