The Etherlite 162 Terminal Server from Digi blends the control and performance of local ports with the convenience of an Ethernet connection. Since the EtherLite ports are real serial devices, they aren't weighed down by complex network terminal server overhead. The result is a much simpler configuration, less Ethernet congestion, and a much lower cost per port when compared to conventional Ethernet terminal servers. The traffic from all (16) RJ-45 serial ports is serviced by a single TCP/IP session, compared to the conventional one-session-per-port method. EtherLite serial ports appear as local ttys under UNIX and as native COM ports under Windows NT. These locally-administered, full "hardware-style" ports allow much greater control than standard terminal server ports.

The unit is fully compliant with IEEE 802.3 and 802.3u standards for 10/100BaseTX for Ethernet/Fast Ethernet and comes with (16) RJ-45 serial ports that are switchable between RS-232 and RS-422. It also has one RJ-45 port for Ethernet connection. The EtherLite Port Server is compatible with UNIX workstations and servers from Sun, HP, IBM, and DEC, and with systems running Windows NT, Java, or SCO. A CD is included with drivers for Windows NT and UNIX. And, installation is simple: attach the units to twisted-pair Ethernet; load the device driver on a UNIX or NT host; and set the IP address. It's that easy.
